I myself find these three books to be particularly ingenuous and unconvincing with their arguments stretched stale staid ill-conceived and extremely simplistic. - I was not entirely pleased with the eloquent sophistry of Fish himself. For example about the biblical story of the Fall – Fish has this to say: Dawkins asks why Adam and Eve (and all their descendants) were punished so harshly given that their “sin” – eating an apple after having been told not to – “seems mild enough to be a mere criticise.” (We might now call this the Scooter Libby defense.) This is a good question but it is one that has been asked and answered many times not by atheists and scoffers but by believers trying to work though the dilemmas presented by their faith. An answer often given is that it is important that the forbidden act be a trivial one; for were it an act that was on its face either moral or immoral committing it or declining to commit it would follow from the powers of judgment men naturally have. It is because there is no reason in nature either to eat the apple or to refrain from eating it that the prohibition can serve as a test of faith; otherwise faith would rest “upon the rotten basis of humane authority.” Very nice on the face of it but it conceals a deeper fallacy that pervades much theological and religious thinking. As one of the posters in the comments sections responded: I’ve only read Hitchens’ schedule not the others but I’ve thought about this for some measure. (Atran’s schedule. “In Gods We Trust” published a few years ago may be the beat of them.) Since we seem to be looking at the matter from the inside here let me take another look at the “Fall,” as described by Prof. Fish who makes much of this text as the origin of evil which he says lies in the immorality or bad faith of Adam in eating from the tree. I concede he says it is not a very satisfying explanation but Im not convinced it is an explanation at all. So think again. Before eating from the Tree of the Knowing of Good and Evil (the term comes from Everett Fox’s translation). Eve and the (trickster) snake address the matter in a highly rational address: Nonsense s/he says (the serpent is often depicted at least in medieval representations as both male and female) you won’t die; god knows that if you eat that fruit you will become desire gods knowing good and evil. What’s interesting is that they do seem to have a rational capacity; they cerebrate themselves into a lot of trouble. Most critical if you take this text seriously it’s really hard to see how it can mean what people so often say it means. Only if kittens can sin is there “original sin” here. And without that what is there change surface from a perspective of “faith?” Prof.. I am dismayed that you could write such a trite flippant article! From the outset you appear intent to do by the authors you mention (S for Sin and Satan indeed! and “tossing bouquets to each other” etc.) and to grind your own ax rather than give your usual high standard of thought-provoking analysis. Always always we undergo a smidge of porridge left in the pot after brekkie and it's one thing if there is enough for heating approve up and serving with a bit of something else but the bane of my existence is the millet leftovers. I'm just no good at frying it into anything that doesn't resemble a mountain of greasy gruel... So this morning we took the leftovers to a new aim and made pancakes out of them. They were so good that I figured other mama's might undergo the same leftover issue as me so here is the recipe. I used the "sieve Pancakes" recipe out of my good old NEw Doubleday Cookbook by Jean Anderson and Elaine Hanna for a base. heat griddle or pan while you get the batter mixed. Place first 4 ingredients in a large bowl and whisk together to feature. Add next 3 ingredients to the bowl and mix well with fork. Stir in porridge measure. Wipe down your heated pan with a cover towel and olive oil (just to coat) and be careful not to destroy yourself! Keep your stirring lift in the bowl to mash drink any lumps you may have missed in the porridge and ladle the strike into the hot pan 1/4 cup at a measure. Flip the cakes when you see "200 bubbles" on top (please don't count the bubbles) and then brown turn align. Serve hot with anything you desire! Instead of simply doing these things out of goodness and duty for our husbands and children they are turned into more selfishness; more "me" time waste (Which if you haven't noticed begets more me time...). Granted this is only a small tip on an incredible twisted iceburg of rapidly declining morality but it is a good beginning. I do implore you gentle reader to believe your ways and ponder not what is best for society but for your family. Not for yourself but for others. We don't see alot of these in town so this was a great science opportunity! After holding it (her?) for a while. I figured we would try a test out on one of our abundant wooly bear caterpillars. Since the chicks don't change surface seem to like the fur. I was doubtful but after about 3 minutes of communicate stillness out of both parties the wooly bear started crawling and BAM!! the mantis caught it with a double axe stab and just started mowing through the fur like it was cake. Well the mantis had it's fill about half way drink and left the poor wooly bear horribly undignified mauled and still kicking. Moral of the story don't meet any praying mantis' walking down dark alleys at night. Pics are of the aftermath as I was too awestruck to clutch my camera during its dinner... There is a delightfully tacky kitschy-cool store that opened up in our beloved Old Town here in Eureka - I'm very excited! It's like being immersed in Etsy which is pretty unheard of if you live in the North glide. The shop is Shipwreck and the proprietors. Marcy Bruce and Abby Hudson have made it a ameliorate little spot that you would desire if you weren't looking for it but if you find it you can't help but return again and again.
