Randy Cohen who writes a weekly New York Times Magazinecolumn "The Ethicist," in which he responds to readers' ethical questions, spoke at an event sponsored by the Jewish Cultural Collective. Cohen alsocontributes regularly to "All Things Considered" on National Public Radio andwas previously a writer on "The Late Show with David Letterman."
"Most philosophers approach virtue by emphasizing character,by starting with an isolated individual," Cohen said. "This relentless focus onthe individual is not something we do in other areas of inquiry."
"We wanted to appeal to a different audience," JCC chair andUW senior Alex Sheridan said. "Typically the JCC events are catered towardundergraduates but we know that Mr. Cohen has a rather large following so wethought it would be a good idea to show a different side of the organization."
"We attracted a really great audience," JCC communicationsdirector Rachel Lansing said. "Granted we have UW college students but thereare also a lot of adults who enjoyed the event so I think it was definitely abig success."
"It was really nice to ask him some of theethical questions that undergraduate students face," Sheridan said. "He doesnot get to answer many of those in his columns so it was cool to hear his perspective."
