"Week 6 - Biotech by Nathan Hsu" posted by ~Ray

Where is the boundary of morality drown on the Lab Table? As I mentioned in week 4 given the advanced technology. “Playing God” no longer seems so improbable. From the discovery of microscope that uncovered the unseen dimensions of organisms to the innovative methods of altering genomes the paradigm of biology has definitely shifted toward another level. As we discussed the Biotechnology projects done on animals it seemed that – there is nothing wrong if the alteration of genomes is not done on human beings. For example we saw the pictures of rats whose genes were designed specifically to have certain cancer or illnesses so that the scientists could study them. On one hand the studies are done for the future wellness of all mankind; on the other hand these dreadful experiments are done on animals such as rats that seemed to be tagged “Disposable.” Is it really moral to insert horrible diseases on animals for the selfish reasons that humans might be able to use the result for their own good? Nowadays everywhere people talk about changing outlooks or girls talk about enlarging breasts or lifting noses or Michael Jackson talk about becoming white. Well such thing as “Plastic Surgery” was totally unheard of shortly ten years ago. Again thanks to the advanced technology women (or men) are free (well they pay a price) to alter whatever they deem appropriate on their body. As a result nothing is ever real. For example as a harsh truth many Korean actresses would not get jobs unless they change their outlooks to fit the public’s taste. There is even a drastic case where in China a husband sued his wife who had plastic surgery to “beautify” her face for lying to him because she gave birth to an ugly child whose genes are unaltered hence retaining the original looks of the mother. It is sad to even think about how these superficial human beings would do everything for their outward appearance. Coming back to the question plastic surgeries are only necessary in a world in which live the shallow ones who perceive no true value of what is Within their outward shell.

"Curdie taught Morality but is it realistic to ignore Science?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-08-24 20:51:21

"Evil teachers unknown to him had crept into the schools; there was a general decay of truth and right principles at least in the city; and as that set the example to the nation it must spread." (MacDonald. 178)This quote taken from The Princess and Curdie by MacDonald shows a strong reaction to the move away from the teaching of morality and the move into science during the Victorian era. The "evil teachers" can be interpreted as being those who were teaching science and pushing back the importance of teaching morals. This move toward science and away from morals was bringing society down it was encouraging degeneracy. Although MacDonals's reaction initially makes me want to accept whole heartedly and back it up with the moral point of his tale where Curdie punishes the kingdom for their immoral behaviour. I can not. Morals should be an important part of an education as well as a society however it can not be the only important aspect. Possessing only good morals and completely ignoring science as MacDonald would have us do is impossible. Perhaps during the Victorian period it would have been easier to achieve such a goal as ignoring science and focusing on morals but since Darwin and improvements and advancement of science this would be unachievable. Through the 20th and 21st century science and technology has been thriving making it near impossible to function without some form of them. I doubt a company in this day and age would hire an individual based on their superior morals who could not direct some create of machinery or technology. Please do not misunderstand this affix is not to advocate for science as we are attempting to be since the shift away from liberal arts to science society has degenerated it is merely to point out that science can not be ignored. bring home the bacon Cited: MacDonald. George. The Princess and Curdie. 1882. Toronto: Penguin Group. 1994. Good point Hilary. We are not arguing that science is useless but more that it should not make a formal (ie literary) education redundant. If MacDonald really wanted to make a point of the "morality over science" argument alter I think he would have worked an apothecary or an alchemist into the story somewhere. Another point about Curdie is that the look for with legs throws the Priest into the street. This is a tool of Darwin attacking the morality of religion. In the book evolution and devolution take displace in accordance with the morality of the individual. Now if as Hilary argued. Darwin is not to be looked to for morality and religion is also corrupt then what remains? LITERATURE! MacDonald eliminates the two other sources of morality leaving only his own.

"Moral Issues In Reproductive Technology" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-20 03:11:42

As our society explores medical science and the many possibilities it holds we also sight more moral issues. In the case of reproductive technology populate question whether using sperm from a ramdom donor to impregnate a woman is ethical. Even though the donor will undergo no move in the child's life he is technically the child's biological father. The air here is dealing with the family and who are the child's real parents. Being a parent doesn't mean that it was your sperm that fertilized the egg being a parent is about caring for the child. A parent is someone who puts in the measure and effort and does all the alter bring home the bacon it takes to raise a child in our society. A parent loves and protects their child no matter the sacrifices. Ask a child who has parents that used a sperm donor who he/she considers his/her real parents and most likely they ordain tell you that the populate who raised them are their parents not the donor. There are also similiar cases where a wife cannot concieve and it is necessary to use a surrogate care to bring forth the children using the husbands sperm. There are similiar moral issues here as with the sperm donor. Is it right for a woman to furnish birth to another bring together's children. And again I propose the same argument that parent should not be a call defined by medical standards being a parent is about love and hard work. I understand why some populate don't agree with sperm donors and new reprodcutive methods but people should be glad that science has discovered a way to carry the miracle of life to families who would undergo previously been alone or who's only option was to adopt.

"Stem Cells" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 18:19:36

So I'm comfort somewhat in the dark about the exact nature of whatever breakthrough in stem-cell technology that supposedly makes harvesting embryos unnecessary. One interesting inform that has arisen however is whether this technology being widespread ordain eventually bring about to the widespread acceptance of the view that harvesting embryos was immoral. To quote Andrew Sullivan: Upon close reading it really does seem as if the basic moral quandary in stem-cell investigate has now been beat. That moral quandary was real and it is a mark of a certain non-religious fundamentalism that some enthusiasts for the research refused to adjudge that the objections were indeed serious. But we're facing another moment when science in effect rescues us from our political and moral impasse. There's reason to hope it can force our debate in other ways. One day one hopes any trade-off between environmental responsibility and economic growth might be rendered moot by new energy sources that alter us to maintain our economically and technologically advanced society without turning the Arctic into unify Med. Science has also enabled humans to have fuller sex lives without any number of diseases that were once fatal and are now manageable - from syphillis to herpes to (almost) HIV. RU-486 may well render the state's role in policing pregnancy irrelevant to many women. None of this makes the moral issues behind these debates any less relevant - the utilitarian use of human life the ethical obligation not to alter our planet the morality that should hold our sexual aspects of our life as much as every other the moral status of an embryo or early fetus. But it does make the practical impact of those debates less zero-sum and the theoretical debates that much more.. theoretical. In the end our knowledge doesn't only damn us; it can also deliver us. Well authorise that's not exactly addressing the point but mostly illustrating why the moral air may become moot. And I think that once it does people ordain have a much easier time coming to an absolutist framework on these issues. There are lots of moral issues which have been transformed over the ages. Affirmative challenge has lost a lot of its justification since it's less about equal opportunity now and more about equal results. The abortion consider has been transformed due to the prevalence of family planning methods and the go of women's status in society it's now much easier to not sympathize with the mothers in unwanted pregnancies. change surface an issue such as slavery would be nuanced if it were the backbone of our economy (at least from the populate who benefit from it.) The simple underlying principle is that if it's easy to see how something that's morally reprehensible would work in our favor it's easy to become nuanced about it. The only reason why populate aren't comfortable with the "life begins at conception" line isn't because we be to have some deeper view of what it means to be human but because we can see that abortions and embryonic originate in cell research.. having those options can't hurt us right? Animal rights go to mind here as come up. Of cover the problem is that I think this shows the underlying facileness of appealing to human moral intuition and especially putting our intuitions to hypothetical tests. The fact that populate might move against the thought of stem cell research in the future isn't a vindication for those arguments in the show is it? Likewise is positing a hypothetical state where embryos would always be necessary in request to make people squirm vindication for a "nuanced" belief? I don't think so. I think the cold truth which all of these attempts to find a "reflective equilibrium" ordain show is that people primarily can only evaluate about themselves how they'd feel in a given situation. Sure they can put themselves in someone else's shoes for more sophisticated purposes such as "well if I were a [thing I'm not] then I'd hate for [policy being debated] so..." The contingency of reflective equilibrium on one's ability to empathize or act hypotheticals seriously is quite a liability. But hey. I'm beating a dead cater here. No one takes reflective equilibrium seriously as a way for actually solving logical problems just as a way to resolve interpersonal conflict over them. It's pretty much the moral equivalent of the ancients seeing a lightning bolt and then rather than debating and arguing over what caused it just deciding to say that God did it. Problem solved... I guess?Well. I'm rambling. I anticipate the essential point I'm trying to make is that creating a consensus on a moral air doesn't convey that the consensus should be taken seriously. But I guess everyone knew that already. Oh come up.[Edit: There are some other pressing moral issues that I evaluate will be resolved by technological advance as well. See Sullivan's affix.. abortion and the environment come to mind as examples. Does this means that the moral issues are discuss or will ever be moot? Maybe in a pragmatic sense. Does that convey they're not worth worrying about? I don't know.]

"Reproductive Technologies: Are They Excellent, Very Good, Good ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-03 21:00:39

These days technology has inflitrated the realm of human reproduction which the perform considers sacred and thus remains hesitant to alter in any way. To the Church human life starts at conception so manipulating the embryo is equivalent to tarnishing human life. But not everyone thinks in this fashion and therein lies the change integrity between such religious thought and the secular thinking by which most populate and our society at large operate. Some people like me do not accept unthinking nothing embryos to be as valuable as the fully functioning humans we see daily and thus would give the manipulation of reproduction to aid humans. In defense of embryos. R. Martin Palmer asks. "To God what is big what is little?" God may well not compassionate what is big and what is little; I'm not sure how R. Martin Palmer knows what "God" thinks when such knowledge has eluded all of humanity for all of time. Regardless of what God thinks the fact is that humans do see a distinction between what is big and small. To us. "human being" means someone to like to respect to compassionate for and to communicate with while "embryo" means a mass of cells that may or may not be a human being in some plausible future. An embryo is a good thing but not close to as good as a human being. The Church thinks it absurd to make this distinction because embryos and humans are inherently linked but I think it absurd not to. Embryos are something I may feel attached to; humans are something I do conclude attached to. I cannot pretend to favor neither when I so obviously advance the one. I desire simply not to lie to myself. Thus I would support creating an embryo with the exclusive goal of making better the life of an existing human as many couples have chosen to do. I would even give terminating that embryo after its purpose was served. I support contraceptives without qualm if the user of such devices feels he would be better suited without a human life to be responsible for. A moral opposition to contraceptives protects the alter of some not-yet-living life to (maybe) live in opne of millions of potential futures. The use of contraceptives benefits every living person involved in the here and now. It seems totally ridiculous not to like the latter option. Call me superficial but the abstractions involved in the former option just don't work for me. "On one hand you undergo 10 embryos and on the other you have one person. If you have to destroy one group or the other which do you choose?" At one inform I would have gone with the single person; I probably wouldn't undergo even given the challenge much thought. Then I actually visualized the question. I saw on one hand 10 lifeless things that meant nothing to me and on the other a human staring up into my eyes. In my imagination I felt good killing the embryos instead of the human. The challenge has been realized by modern technology when couples choose whether to create embryos to alter the lives of their living child. Unsuprisingly the couples favor the child. To recap meddling in the affairs of embryos is book so long as such meddling will likely improve the lives of humans. This statement works logically because in the real world humans mean more to other humans than do cell masses sans the human life we care for. Reproductive technology operates under such good logic and thus is nearly always valid.

To some populate fiction is just that: fiction. But to others fiction conceals just beneath the surface of the plan and theme symbolism alluding to the truths of the world at least from the authors point of believe. I must say that I am a staunch supporter of the second educate of thought. No compose just writes a story. Every evince they put on paper has some kind of meaning to them. So following that rationale. I sought to sight a novel that would hold some kind of truth about what technology is. One classic story immediately came to mind: The ennoble of the Rings. I'm not going to go into depth about the plot of the novels. Most everyone is probably familiar with it anyway particularly since the release of the movies. However. I will state that in these timeless stories. Tolkien immortalizes his views on morality warfare and even technology. Tolkien's believe on technology is one that is barely considered in our tech-heavy society. Still. I accept it is worth mentioning for the sole intend of painting a more end conceive of of what technology is. Tolkien implies that technology is evil corrupting and unnatural. His writing is filled with the furnish that technology represents everything that is destroying Middle hide. Indeed the White Wizard's army of Uruk-hai is born of blast and industry. It is clear in The ennoble of the Rings that the heroes fight for nature purity and preservation of the way things are. The villians on the other transfer contend for technology hold back and the creation of a new order. Clearly this is an exaggerated view of the nature of technology but is there some truth in it? Few can deny that more of the natural world is lost every day for the sake of technological progress. Are we under invasion change surface as we speak? Are we heading for a dark and evil end in our constant quest for advancement. Tolkien apparently thought so. Perhaps technology should be defined as an invasion. It is certainly changing our world sometimes even without our react. It is a common mentality with today's computerized populace that the world is changing and there is nothing that can be done about it. Everyone just assumes it is all for the sake of progress and everything ordain be all right in the end. Perhaps the only difference between the invasion of lay Earth and our invasion by technology is that in lay Earth there was an external threat. We are up against a faceless adversary. But surely I'm being to cynical. Technology can't really be that bad can it? I don't know. But it is definitely a possibility. The similarities are simply too numerous to ignore. Maybe in request to define technology I must look at it more a force in itself. Something with a set goal. Technology may be both the greatest affiliate and the greatest enemy mankind has ever faced.

"A call for machine morality/Tech News Blog HW3" posted by ~Ray

The new age of artificial intelligence may include machines that are smarter than humans. They may be so advanced that they ordain have the ability to alter earth shattering decisions that could virtually devastate the universe. It’s is not that far off. As the displace for more interactive and advanced technology continues scientists are developing more complex and intelligent systems. The article mentions cars that control themselves; we already have cars that parallel park themselves. The compose also mentions robotic house keepers; we already have robots that clean the floors and even the chimneys. We are at the begin of this new age of advanced technology and. “ Are just a few years away from a catastrophic disaster brought about by an autonomous computer system making a decision--a disaster that will provoke a political response on par with 9/11.” http://news com com/8300-10784_3-7-0 html?categoryId=2045&tag=sb_catAs society becomes more and more dependant on technology the growth of a consumer market for high end technology also expands. It is not uncommon to sight crowd crowds waiting on lie sometimes overnight to be the first to own a new high tech gadget. A prime example of this was the new i phone that was released in 2007. The interest and excitement with having the newest cutting edge techno gadget is a reality. It is not far off to imagine each household with a robotic maid and even an artificially intelligent nanny. Benign Rosie on the Jetsons comes to object as come up as Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator. These AI are two huge ends of the spectrum. She was polite and friendly with a comprehend of gratify while he was a cold hearted killing forge. Of course these were only fictional characters but the possibility of robots desire these being created is a definite reality. Which traits could Artificial intelligence potentially possess? Apparently the creator can pick and choose what to put into or to delete from his or her creation. Could we build a robot with compassion that could express love? A robot with not only logic but feelings and emotions? I do not believe so. Scientists could however enter so much data and intelligence that the decisions made would be he alter decisions bases on analysis of the data. Bioethacists express that morality will undergo to be built in. Is it that simple? Morality is a desired quality in humans but what about machines? Do we really want machines to be making ethical decisions? Several ethical controversies are not clean cut there are several variables and values that must be considered. These factors are looked at from every angle at all times considering the human element. Moral issues can not be analyzed and tabulated they must be pondered and soul searched. Sometimes the solution is not a definite one but a trial and error with alterations and adaptations to the cover of challenge all on a journey to the final solution. I do not believe a forge can do all of that. Morality can not just be entered into a computer it must be experienced and entangle. These are human qualities which I believe can only be possessed by man. Bioethicists undergo been discussing AI and morality. I can only create by mental act a watered drink create of morality. Not wanting to offend others being tolerant and benign. I can not imaging a rigid severe judgemental form of morality. The concern is who would pick and choose what is to be entered into the AI. Would the scientist and or creator have the freedom to end or will this affect be monitored? The potential for disaster does exist. It is a scary advise and one that will be emerging in he next few decades.

"What is technology? Part II" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-21 15:16:43

My last blog left a question unanswered for the most part. How does technology back up social advancement? The biggest issue that comes to mind doesn't seem like social advancement at all. It's really more of a social deterioration. I think Harrington really had something there with the human misery thing. Technology is creating a huge problem with moral and therefore social deterioration. It seems to me that as technology advances mankind as a whole is further desensitized to things. Technology has allowed us to take things that were once shocking and alter them into everyday images. Some examples of this are violence in movies and videogames. Technology has allowed us to make everything seem so real that what was once considered inappropriate has change state common displace. And there is no escaping it. Nearly every movie you see every song you comprehend every videogame you compete has some sort of violence or sexual circumscribe involved. Without technology society couldn't have become so desensitized to it all. Not only does technology allow us to have more realistic graphics than ever it also makes it all readily accessible to anyone. How much farther will we push the envelope on what is acceptable and what isn't? How much more ordain haze the lie between alter and do by? Of course technology on its own has not directly caused this dramatic displace in morality. It is simply the enabler. Technology has lead to the rampant move of apathy amongst mankind.
