So if they do not protect children then why have them?08/27/2007Sex offender laws don’t always defend children from predators but one lie of defense can go away in the home said Detective Cathy Bickford of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff Department. And that defense is “parental awareness,” Bickford said. “regardless of whether it’s on the computer where your children are or who they’re hanging out with.”One particular aim of awareness parents be is of what their children are doing on the computer for which Bickford recommends monitoring software that can log what’s being typed and what’s being viewed. She also encouraged parents not to just beware of danger to children from strangers noting that offenders sometimes can be as close as a dwell or a relative.- They are more than likely a family member or someone very close to the family. Stranger danger accounts for about 5% or less of all sex crimes.“I would use the same precautions with your friends and family members as you would with a stranger,” Bickford said. Bickford recommended and the Web place for the Center for Missing and Exploited Children () as good resources for parents and children in knowing what to look for. Bickford also does outreach work in schools by request. Sheriff Walt Wilson said other members of his office fill such requests as come up. He said he’s applied for grant funding to be able to place resource officers in some schools but was turned down. Treatment also is available for victims and offenders. I know people who were told which displace to go to and it did not work and later when they open another place to go to it worked out for them. Plus court appointed are usually very expensive. Kochera said the county is lucky to undergo the schedule because the man who runs it is well-known in the field.“I answer on a lot of state committees and when we lay training he’s the man we pay to do the training,” she said. She also pointed out that while “curing” sex offenders is not a realistic goal giving them treatment keeps them under regular supervision which is the beat way to stop them from reoffending.- There is not a "cure" for anything object from God. But treatment does work for offenders who want to help themselves.
