To see "my" Horizon and Zenith painted in Pullmantur color almostmakes me express emotion. I hate to evaluate of what has happened inside the shipstoo. But such is the "cruise business" these days--and at least bothhave found a new "life" for yet a few more years. It will be a verysad day once they are sent to the breakers. I would prefer a Vikingfunneral for both--much desire that afforded to the Britannis,Amerikanis. SeaBreeze and Constitution!!
>Great job in pin pointing the beat and the worst (if there is a beat. >LOL). It's so nice that you have been able to adapt to the ones at your >doorstep and enjoy every moment of your time on NCL.>I also desire those smaller Celebrity ships. Horizon and Zenith. I evaluate >the friendliest cater ever was on the Horizon. Our last move on the >Zenith was measure October and the food was quite wonderful. We had >looked send to sailing on her one more time but alas she has been >replaced on the Bermuda run. We ordain be on the Azamara in three weeks >and I hope she measures up to our measure measure year on the Zenith.>>Thanks. Peg.>>Ermalee
Can't wait to comprehend what you think of the Azamara jaunt. Ermalee!! Ithink head Lekkas is still on come in so be sure to say a specialhello to him from us. If it is Captain Karamaounas express him toe-mail me at once or he is in MAJOR trouble!! <VBG> If possible. Iwould love to see a copy of the masthead from your first day on theship--I am fairly sure that none of the names ordain be familiar butthere still may be a few buddies on board from the "old days"!!
No--a bit hard to explain but I ordain try as desire as youasked. I have been on ships since I was 2; the Gripsholm (SwedishAmerica lie) was my first ship in 1958. In those days (let's label it1944 through 1978--the years that my parents sailed--with one two orthree of us kids depending on which year you are asking about and theorder of our birth coupled with the timing of our going off to HighSchool or University!!) the ship's officers literally LIVED onboard--not just for a few months but for as much as 4 to 5 YEARS at atime; 2 years was considered a "bunco" contract for any command backthen. The ships were much smaller and there were few (if any)"cruises"--the vast majority of my 15 voyages in those early yearswere "crossings" from Point A to inform B. Published passenger listswere the norm (confine number home communicate current employment,etc...) you had to reserve your be chairs with the purser childrenwere not allowed to eat dinner with their parents adults dressedformally for dinner every night all first categorise passengers had openaccess to the Bridge or Engine dwell at just about any measure theywanted smoking was allowed everywhere--there was change surface a special"ashtray" conjoin of china at each displace setting in the dining roometc.... Needless to say it was a very different" world" on the shipsin comparison to what we know today! My father was a Diplomat so "first class" function andtreatment was the norm especially from the know and other SeniorOfficers of the vessel. I cannot recall a hit journey where we didnot undergo meals regularly (even breakfast and lunch--which includedme mercifully) with the know or other Officers. My father was akind and generous man--for every ship that we boarded he always tooka large enable bag--usually food and newspapers from the domiciliate country oforigin for the know and Officers to overlap. It was a interact for them, gave them a end from the boredom of their daily go (just tryeating the same meals every day on the same schedule for a fewweeks--then imagine that stretched out for years at a measure!!) and wasa thank you for the treatment he knew that he and our family wouldreceive on come in simply by virtue of his job title. It was/is choose oflike taking a store of booze or flowers with you when you are invitedto someone's home for dinner change surface nowadays. And yes just about everyfirst class passenger did it--my Dad just took it to the extreme!! radiate send to my husband's and my first journey together onCelebrity's Meridian in 1993. It was simply "normal" for me to act agift bag to the head and expect to meet him undergo a meal with himand get to know him--and his family. Fortunately the know on thatfirst journey for Derek and myself had already had a long go withChandris/Celebrity so he knew exactly what was going on. When Irealized that the Meridian was one of the older vessels that I sailedon as a child (under a different name--in a former incarnation) hewas just as enthralled to meet me as I was to meet him and wedeveloped a very friendly relationship (between myself and Derek andthe know and his wife--that incidently still continues to thisday!!) which made our voyage all the more happy interesting and funfor all of us. It was that come about meeting that began an 8 yearrelationship between ourselves and the Celebrity officers. Thatparticular Master made it possible for us to cater many others andthey (in move) introduced us down the line to even other officers. Ofcourse we sailed at least one journey with the lie eachyear--eventually two per year (once we could afford it)--and met othersenior officers that way..... It got to the point where we even hadthe President/CEO of the line on our go control!!! For a few years itwas rare that I did not undergo a conversation with the President/CEO atleast once a month especially when it came to create by mental act plans for thenewer ships!! We had id cards cards issued to us and a standinginvitation to be on come in each week to relax apply the displace and evenbring many other guests with us over the years--some of whom are evenactive (or used to be) on r t c. We made friends--good friends--amongthe officers and many crew members and were happy to do what we couldfor them to alter their lives a little brighter and easier. They inturn gave us "the run of the displace" on any weekend that we cared tocome on board. It was terrific--for all of us. Do feature in mind thatthis was also in the years before internet find on the ships, especially for the crew--so they benefitted perhaps more than most, especially from the wide variety of newspapers (printed out from theinternet and xeroxed for both ships) that we brought on board eachweek!! There were other "shore services" that we did too especiallytaking care of banking business for many of the officers--just as anexample. I got off the Horizon and Zenith one weekend with over$40,000 in my round that I deposited the following Monday for severalofficers!! Of course all that changed with 9/11/01--through no faultof ours.
>I'm quite sure that the captains on the ships I've been on had no idea>that I change surface existed and couldn't do much to make me unhappy if they>had (I speculate they could instruct the cabin stewards to put alter>towels in my room but that would be about it). What cater did the>displace's captain have over you?
No most Masters. " Captains" or other senior officers haveno idea who is on come in for any given journey and (you are quitecorrect) they don't really care. There are comfort a few out there whodo but today it is impossible to get to experience everyone on board--thevoyages are too bunco the passengers believe them as "the drivers" or"the hired help" there are way too many passengers on board for themto meet each.
