Over at Kate Elliott's lj where she asked for urban fantasy recommendations () and I have gotten into a discussion of what exactly if anything urban fantasy is. And I wound up writing a little essay I wanted to tidy slightly and put here for future reference because otherwise it will be gone like the five and dime. And I can see future situations where it would be useful.... In the US it's usually used for what seem to be two or three distinctly different marketing categories. Which is to say: (1) books such as War for the Oaks the sort of classical urban fantasy which involves modern everyday persons in a city setting in sudden contact with the numinous; (2) modern-day fantasy noir detective novels a la Jim Butcher; (3) romance (or smut) in a fantasy suit a la Keri Arthur aka "Paranormal Romance," which I guess is a term the Romance genre hates to have us appropriate because they have their own uses for it. Low fantasy is a term I more often hear used for books such as Leiber and Pratchett which are second-world fantasy but *not* concerned with the doings of the great and noble saving the world. The identifying facet of "urban" fantasy as we know it (as the term is used in the US today) seems to be about the infringement of magic on a mundane world recognizably our own--or very close to it: the world of Sunshine isn't quite our world but it's a world where our basic assumptions about how the world works still hold (even when that makes the worldbuilding kind of wonky because it's both a city under seige and a completely mundane setting)--rather than the necessity of an "urban" setting. In other words as its used the "urban" in "urban" fantasy seems to be a code word meaning "Our real world right here or one much like it" rather than as would seem logical a code word meaning "takes place in a city."The code word for "takes place in a city and features non-noble characters and everyday concerns" seems to be "low fantasy." (As opposed to high or quest fantasy.)And then you can bring in "fantasy of manners" and have the argument about how Swordspoint is not like Jhereg. I'm not a big believer in categorization my own self except in the sense of "I read a book (x--let's pick War for the Oaks as for many people it's *the* type example of what they mean when they say "urban fantasy")and I loved it; what else can I read that's like War for the Oaks?"And I might say well you could read Gael Baudino's Gossamer Axe or Pamela Dean's Tam Lin or Megan Lindholm's Wizard of the Pigeons or Jim Butcher's Storm Front or Keri Arthur's or Robin McKinley's Sunshine or my own Whiskey & Water or Tom Robbins' Jitterbug Perfume or Tim Powers' Last Call--what was it you liked about War for the Oaks? Because all these other books have some similar type characteristics. And all have some major differences of course. But I'm a descriptivist rather than a prescriptionist and the thing they all have in common--the only thing that all books I've generally seen categorized/understood as as "urban fantasy" have in common--is that intersection of (or trangression of) the numinous with (upon) the mundane world. In urban fantasy you don't leave the chip shop and go to another world to find the unicorn. Rather the unicorn shows up at the chip shop and orders the cod. In other words as its used the "urban" in "urban" fantasy seems to be a code word meaning "Our real world right here or one much like it" rather than as would seem logical a code word meaning "takes place in a city" I'd have pegged those two as fitting the definition. Except that the "real world" they take place in is the shadow realm of the espionage agencies which may be an occult realm from the point of view of the reader of urban fantasy insofar as it's not personally accessible to them. Help! I'm confused: am I writing urban fantasy or not? :) Excellent use of the word "numinous" in an essay! The Impromptu LJ Reader Poll of One gives this five stars out of five. Urban fantasy to its extreme might be Michael Swanwick's The Iron Dragon's Daughter where there's an entirely modern industrial fantasy world. Interestingly enough. Wikipedia has a very recent article on. They did include your name on the list of authors who qualify. :)By the definition you give. I think you can extend urban fantasy to CS Lewis' Narnia books and Space trilogy and Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising pentalogy. I think you're totally right on the generic nature of the "urban fantasy" phrase - to me it pretty much signifies anything set in "our" world or as you put it so much better the intersection of the numinous with the mundane world. My first formal (real? official?) exposure to "urban fantasy" were the SERRAted Edge books by Mercedes Lackey and I think that whole concept kind of influenced my mental picture of UF for me. As for "high" and "low" fantasy. I don't really distinguish between the two myself. Anything that's set on another world or that involves characters going to another world (and leaving "our" world behind for at least the duration of the book if not permanently) is pretty much all high fantasy to me. i was just thinking about urban fantasy the other day because I'm writing something set in deepest darkest Cornwall (reasonably appropriate given that I live down here) and was wondering whether I should call it urban fantasy or rural fantasy or something else. I tend to think of things in terms of "epic fantasy" (the Eddingses. Jordans. Martins and others with thick oeuvres telling stories over several volumes) that don't to me necessarily say "high fantasy" if there're significant differences from the stock of Rustic Youths. Simpering Maidens. Sarcastic Female Authority Figures. Sneaky Thieves. Wise Old Men et al capturing the Adjective Noun plot coupons (Holy Chalice. Sacred Cup. Pink Tiara whatever) that can then be redeemed for Saving the World (valid Monday through Thursday one per customer no rain checks). For me urban fantasy is always set in a city. Perhaps because I can hear my school Latin teacher shouting URBS URBIS URBI at me. Neverwhere as mentioned fits nicely. American Gods.. not so much. I might call that "modern fantasy". What a great essay - one thing I've noticed is that a lot of urban fantasy contains a lot of horror elements. Your example of Sunshine is a good one. The romance world's "paranormal romance" is another good example of this - generally speaking many of the urban "fantasy" novels today contain what could be called "classic" horror elements - vampires therianthropes dark magic etc. So should they really be called urban horror? What would be the difference between urban fantasy and urban horror?I sometimes worry that we are making too many little boxes for our books to go in. He was of the opinion that the term "urban fantasy" means "paranormal romance/mystery series with female protagonist," such as Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison. I argued that "urban fantasy" means "magical novels and stories set in contemporary real-world urban settings," such as War for the Oaks. Turns out that many other people including who is an agent agree with him. I think we have here a case of newer writers and critics appropriating an existing term for a new subgenre (possibly without realizing it). We all need to understand that this term has at least two distinct meanings in addition to the arguments that can be had over the exact definition of each meaning and whether or not a given work fits into it. Riley is a werewolf and doesn't have human morals about sex; thus if she needs to use sex to get information during a mission she will without qualms. It wouldn't count as romance either because she doesn't commit to any one guy during the course of the series (at least as far as I've read and people who like to spoil tell me that hasn't changed in the latter ones). She is "involved" sexually with three men and committed to none. That's not romance. That's closer to erotica if anything. Classification. I'd put them under "urban fantasy with erotic elements," because that's what they are -- elements. The erotic elements would apply to almost all of Piers Anthony's novels or Jacqueline Carey's or Laurell K. Hamilton's...... Oh bother. I don't see Pamela Dean's Tam Lin or Hand's Waking the Moon as urban fantasy any more than I'd necessarily define the Tapestry triology by Guy Gaverial Kay or Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel as urban fantasy. They felt more collegiate in nature and less well dark and noirish. But later I think there will be some alternate universe stuff and they might be back where're they're supposed to be or somewhere else entirely and I'm not really sure what that will make the novel. But the pov character is a young girl under the impression that she's a perfectly "normal" human teen-ager so I think it fits in with your description above: the luminous is coming to her (or is her but she doesn't know that so it's all new and radiant and bloody and frightening). What about stuff that was written about the mundane world but now mundanity has shifted? More specifically,though. I'm thinking of things like Edward Eager's Half Magic or E. Nesbit's Five Children and It. Those don't really feel like urban fantasy to me but I think they are by your definition. (On the other hand. Nesbit's Harding's Luck does feel more like urban fantasy even though much of the action is about going to other places and times. Maybe because it's grittier?) I've had that song stuck in my head all day trying to further filk itself. It hasn't gone anywhere amusing but it was a good song to have stuck in my head. I have occasionally toyed with the idea of suburban fantasy namely if that's urban what can I do to make it suburban or Middle America - and more to the point make it appeal to that audience? Oh wait does that audience read? (I don't mean the freaks. I mean the ones who don't already read the genres. I expect I am doomed and that TV would be the way to reach that audience. But suburban fantasy is an interesting brain toy that may help me finish that other book.) I always assumed that low fantasy was the sort of stuff that involved a lot of puns and bad jokes and was generally very comedic but not long on morality or world-saving or great cosmic truths. As in "low comedy". Isn't the paranormal smut genre dead yet? Or undead and staked? Sigh. It does have some um impressive staying power. Maybe I should dig out those notes I had for one after all and see if I can twist it enough to be interesting to me. That oughta kill off the market.
