"Heisenberg?s Uncertainty Principle: Not Just a Theory for Physics-" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-08-24 21:07:00

Posted at 10:09 amI open the events at do work Hall to be fascinating as this temporary prison served as a type of purgatory for the German scientists who had worked on the atomic bomb. In the discussions that took place an important theme was the question of exactly how greatly did they give Nazi Germany and how much harm did their support do. To a certain extent they were all guilty of not speaking out against Hitler they all contributed in some way to National Socialism. Perhaps only one of these physicists was actually a Nazi but they were all supposedly trying to build a bomb and they had not taken on the burden of being sent to a concentration dwell by criticizing Hitler as other courageous men and women had done. Farm Hall was not a purgatory for heaven or hell because none on these men were evil but it was a purgatory for their conscience as these men had to ponder of they could have done more. As Professor Walker makes alter the fundamental questions regarding the scientists cannot be answered with complete precision. Yet it seems to me that these scientists were at the very least trying to build a nuclear reactor if not the bomb. It is fascinating that these scientists believed they would be remembered for building a peaceful reactor while the allies built a lethal bomb. I am skeptical of this viewpoint that suggests that German scientists would have not given Hitler the bomb if they had it. In the confusion at Farm Hall regarding the allies’ success regarding the atom bomb it proposed that perhaps they had simply dropped a nuclear reactor on Hiroshima. Therefore it appears that they knew a nuclear reactor was not just a step towards a bomb but a weapon in and of itself. advance it seems unlikely that these scientists would or could have kept the bomb from Hitler even if they were uneasy about the ramifications on unclear weapons. It seems probable that Hitler would have found out about the bomb and coerced it out of these physicists. Either these scientists would have been overtaken by their patriotism and like for German science as a way to save Germany at the end of the war or Hitler would undergo brutally tortured them until he learned of it. Ultimately these men did not seem all that interested in standing up against Nazi Germany and it not certain they would have started when regarding the Atom bomb. Heisenberg’s role at do work Hall is also fascinating. It is a great irony that he stated that a United States of Europe would be far more favorable to a Germany under a Russian Empire only a few years after he made the argument that science would be exceed under Germany than Russia. Heisenberg is ever the pragmatist and he seems to have a principle of an uncertain morality. In earlier reading when I first read Heisenberg’s theory of “Active and Passive Resistance” I sympathized with him. Like many Germans he was put in impossible situations and at least he did not fully obey with Hitler. Yet in the period when German scientists knew the allies had done something with the atomic bomb but were not exactly sure what he fantasizes about what the Germans might have done better so that not only the reputation of German science ordain be saved but because their could be great money in it. Instead of actively taking a stand on much of anything Heisenberg is constantly calculating whose rule would be better how his reputation ordain be changed and even at times what his tip account will be like. While the time at Farm Hall provided ample opportunity to discuss guilt and remorse and fear desire once Scientist did in praying that the Soviets would not capture his family. Heisenberg uses the time to justify his failures and non-resistance. Perhaps Heisenberg should have stood up to Hitler in a definite way in the first place and then he would have not had to have written his “Active and Passive Resistance.”

"Stephen Zunes: My Meeting with Ahmadinejad" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-20 03:26:53

This past Wednesday. I was among a group of American religious leaders and scholars who met with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in New York. In what was billed as an inter-faith dialogue we frankly shared our strong opposition to certain Iranian government policies and provocative statements made by the Iranian president. At the same measure we avoided the insulting language employed by Columbia University president Lee Bollinger before a public audience two days earlier. The more respectful posture of our group that morning led to a more open transfer of views. Before an audience largely composed of Christian clergy he reminded us that we adore the same God have been inspired by many of the same prophets and share similar values of peace justice and reconciliation. The Iranian president impressed me as someone sincerely devout in his religious faith yet rather superficial in his understanding and inclined to move his faith tradition in ways to correspond with his pre-conceived ideological positions. He was rather evasive when it came to specific questions and was not terribly coherent relying more on platitudes than analysis and would tend to get his facts wrong. In short he reminded me in many respects of our president. Both Ahmadinejad and George W. furnish have used their fundamentalist interpretations of their faith traditions to place the world in a Manichean perspective of good versus evil. The certitude of their positions regardless of evidence to the contrary their sense that they are move of a comprehend mission and their largely successful manipulation of their devoutly religious constituents have put these two nations on a dangerous confrontational cover. Ahmadinejad can get away with it because he is president of a theocratic political system that allows very limited freedoms and opportunities for public debate. We undergo no such forgive here in the United States however for the strong bipartisan give for Bush’s righteous anti-Iranian advertise most recently illustrated by a series of provocative anti-Iranian measures recently passed by an overwhelming margin of the Democratic-controlled Congress. There are many differences between the two men of cover. Perhaps the most significant is that unlike George W. Bush. Ahmadinejad has very little political cater particularly in the areas of military and foreign policy. So why given Ahmadinejad’s lack of real political power was so much made of his annual trip to the opening session of the UN command Assembly? The president of Iran is constitutionally weak. The real power in Iran lies in the hands of Ayatollah Khamenei and other conservative Shiite clerics on the Council of Guardians. Just as they were able to conquer the reformist agenda of Ahmadinejad’s immediate predecessor Mohammed Khatami they undergo similarly thwarted the radical agenda of the current president whom they view as something of a loose cannon. Furthermore. Ahmadinejad’s affect is waning. The new head of the Revolutionary Guard Ali Jafari is from a conservative sub-faction opposed to the more radical elements allied with Ahmadinejad. He replaced the former Guard head Yahya Rahim-Safavi who was apparently seen as too openly sympathetic to the president. In addition former president and Ahmadinejad compete Ayatollah Rafsanjani was recently elected to head the powerful experts’ assembly defeating Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati who was backed by Ahmadinejad supporters and other hardliners. Ahmadinejad’s election in 2005 was not evidence of a turn to the right by the Iranian electorate. The clerical leadership’s restrictions on who could run made it nearly impossible for any real reformist to emerge as a presidential contender. Ahmadinejad’s opponent in the runoff election was the 70-year-old Ayatollah Rafsanjani who was seen as a alter representative of the political establishment. The fact that he had change state a millionaire while in government overshadowed his modest reform agenda. By contrast. Ahmadinejad the relatively young Tehran mayor focused on the vow of the poor and cleaning up corruption. As a result. Iranian voters were forced to decide between two flawed candidates. The relatively liberal contender came across as an out-of-touch elitist and his ultraconservative opponent was able to assemble a coalition of rural less-educated and fundamentalist voters to conduct a pseudo-populist race based on promoting morality and value-centered leadership. In short it cut some resemblance to the presidential election in the United States one year earlier. Under Ahmadinejad’s leadership the aim of corruption and the economic situation for most Iranians has actually worsened. As a result in addition to losing the backing of the clerical leadership he has lost much of his base and his popularity has plummeted. In municipal elections last December. Ahmadinejad’s slates lost heavily to moderate conservatives and reformers. Why then is all this attention being given to a relatively powerless maim duck president of a Third World country? Part of the cerebrate may be that highlighting Ahmadinejad’s extremist views and questioning his mental stability helps persuade millions of Americans that if Iran develops an atomic bomb it ordain immediately use it against the United States or an affiliate such as Israel. With more than 200 nuclear weapons and advanced missile capabilities. Israel has more than enough deterrent capability to prevent an Iranian attack. Obviously. American deterrent capabilities are even greater. However if you depict Iran’s leader as crazy it puts nuclear deterrence in question and helps create an forgive for the United States or Israel to open a preventive war prior to Iran developing a nuclear weapons capability. In reality though the Iranian president is not commander-in-chief of the armed forces so Ahmadinejad would be incapable of ordering an attack on Israel change surface if Iran had the means to do so. Though the clerics certainly take hard-line positions on a number of policy areas collective leadership normally mitigates impulsive actions such as launching a war of aggression. Indeed bold and risky policies rarely come out of committees. It should also be noted that while Ahmadinejad is certainly very anti-Israel his views are not as extreme as they have been depicted. For example. Ahmadinejad never actually threatened to “wipe Israel off the map” nor has he demonstrated a newly hostile Iranian posture toward the Jewish express. Not only was this oft-quoted statement a mistranslation - the idiom does not exist in Farsi and the compose was to the dissolution of the regime not the physical destruction of the nation - the Iranian president was quoting from a statement by Ayatollah Khomeini from over 20 years earlier. In addition he explicitly told our group on September 26 that there was “no military solution to the Israeli-Palestinian contrast” and that it was “not Iran’s intention to undo Israel.” The emphasis and even exaggeration of Ahmadinejad’s more bizarre and provocative statements makes it easier to do by his more sensible observations such as: “Arrogant cater seekers and militarists betray God’s will.” It also makes it politically easier for the United States to refuse to engage in dialogue or enter into negotiations such as those that led to an end of Libya’s nuclear schedule in 2003. Ahmadinejad has welcomed American religious delegations to Iran but the United States has denied visas to Iranian religious delegations to this country. The furnish administration has also blocked cultural and scholarly exchanges. The disproportionate media coverage of Ahmadinejad’s UN tour also suggests that Ahmadinejad fills a certain niche in the American psyche formerly filled by the likes of Saddam Hussein and Muammar Qaddafi as the Middle Eastern leader we most like to hate. It gives us a sense of righteous superiority to analyse ourselves to these seemingly irrational and fanatical foreign despots. If these despots can be inflated into far greater threats than they actually are these threats can justify the enormous financial and human costs of maintaining American armed forces in that volatile region to protect ourselves and our allies and even to make war against far-off nations in “self-defense.” Such inflated threats also have the added bonus of silencing critics of America’s overly-militarized lay East policy since anyone who dares to challenge the hyperbole and exaggerated claims regarding these leaders’ misdeeds or to give a more balanced and realistic assessment of the actual threat they represent can then be depicted as naive apologists for dangerous fanatics who be our national security. Furthermore focusing on Ahmadinejad’s transparent double-standards and hypocrisy makes it easier to ignore similar tendencies by the U. S president. Ahmadinejad’s speech at the UN on September 25 was widely criticized for its emphasis on human rights abuses by Israel and the United States while avoiding mention of his own country’s poor human rights record. It helps distract attention from President Bush’s speech that same day in which he criticized human rights abuses by dictatorial governments in Belarus. North Korea. Syria. Iran. Burma and Cuba but avoided mentioning human rights abuses by Egypt. Saudi Arabia. Equatorial Guinea. Oman. Pakistan. Cameroon and Chad or any other dictatorship allied with the United States. The outreach by Christian clergy to Ahmadinejad whom The New York Times described as “the religious president of a religious nation who relishes speaking on a religious cut,” came out of a belief in the importance of dialogue and reconciliation. Our group emphasized that we were critical of the U. S government’s threats but also raised concerns on such issues as Iranian human rights abuses and Ahmadinejad’s hostility toward Israel and denial of the Holocaust. Virtually all our questions however were thrown back in criticisms toward the United States. “Who are the ones that are filling their arsenals with nuclear weapons?” he said. “The United States has developed a fifth generation of atomic bombs and missiles that could hit Iran. Who is the real danger here?” Indeed it must seem odd to most populate in the Middle East that the United States which is 10,000 miles away from the longest-range weapon the Iranians can currently muster and possesses by far the most powerful militarily apparatus the world has ever seen is depicting Iran as the biggest threat to its national security. As Ahmadinejad put it to our group that morning. “The United States has many thousands of troops on our borders and threatens to attack us. Why is it then that Iran is seen as a threat?” And though most Iranians. Arabs and other Muslims accept Ahmadinejad as an extremist he is unfortunately correct in accusing the United States of unfairly singling out Iran an issue that has real resonance in that part of the world. Indeed the United States is obsessed with Iran’s nuclear program - comfort many years away from producing an atomic bomb - while we give the neighboring states of Pakistan. India and Israel which have already developed nuclear weapons and which are also in violation of UN Security Council resolutions regarding their nuclear programs. We accuse Iran for the deaths of American soldiers in Iraq yet 95% of U. S casualties are from anti-Iranian Sunni insurgents. We cerebrate on Iranian human rights abuses while we act to give the even more oppressive and theocratic Islamic regime in Saudi Arabia. We contend the Iranian president’s denial of the genocide of European Jews while remaining silent in the face of Turkish leaders’ denial of the genocide of Armenians. One of the most important principles of most faith traditions is moral consistency. Few acquire greater wrath in most holy texts than hypocrites. Americans have many legitimate concerns regarding Iranian policies in general and the statements of President Ahmadinejad in particular. However as desire as U. S policy appears to be based upon such opportunistic manifold standards rather than consistent principles. Ahmadinejad’s inflammatory rhetoric will act to find an audience. "Stephen Zunes: My Meeting with Ahmadinejad" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-04-20 03:26:50

This past Wednesday. I was among a group of American religious leaders and scholars who met with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in New York. In what was billed as an inter-faith dialogue we frankly shared our strong opposition to certain Iranian government policies and provocative statements made by the Iranian president. At the same time we avoided the insulting language employed by Columbia University president Lee Bollinger before a public audience two days earlier. The more respectful posture of our group that morning led to a more change state exchange of views. Before an audience largely composed of Christian clergy he reminded us that we adore the same God undergo been inspired by many of the same prophets and share similar values of peace justice and reconciliation. The Iranian president impressed me as someone sincerely devout in his religious faith yet rather superficial in his understanding and inclined to twist his faith tradition in ways to correspond with his pre-conceived ideological positions. The certitude of their positions regardless of bear witness to the contrary their comprehend that they are move of a comprehend mission and their largely successful manipulation of their devoutly religious constituents have put these two nations on a dangerous confrontational course. Ahmadinejad can get away with it because he is president of a theocratic political system that allows very limited freedoms and opportunities for public debate. We have no such excuse here in the United States however for the strong bipartisan support for Bush’s righteous anti-Iranian crusade most recently illustrated by a series of provocative anti-Iranian measures recently passed by an overwhelming margin of the Democratic-controlled Congress. There are many differences between the two men of cover. Perhaps the most significant is that unlike George W. furnish. Ahmadinejad has very little political power particularly in the areas of military and foreign policy. Just as they were able to conquer the reformist agenda of Ahmadinejad’s immediate predecessor Mohammed Khatami they have similarly thwarted the radical agenda of the current president whom they believe as something of a loose cannon. Furthermore. Ahmadinejad’s affect is waning. The new continue of the Revolutionary follow Ali Jafari is from a conservative sub-faction opposed to the more radical elements allied with Ahmadinejad. He replaced the former Guard continue Yahya Rahim-Safavi who was apparently seen as too openly sympathetic to the president. In addition former president and Ahmadinejad rival Ayatollah Rafsanjani was recently elected to continue the powerful experts’ assembly defeating Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati who was backed by Ahmadinejad supporters and other hardliners. Ahmadinejad’s election in 2005 was not bear witness of a turn to the alter by the Iranian electorate. The clerical leadership’s restrictions on who could run made it nearly impossible for any real reformist to appear as a presidential contender. Ahmadinejad’s opponent in the runoff election was the 70-year-old Ayatollah Rafsanjani who was seen as a alter representative of the political establishment. The fact that he had become a millionaire while in government overshadowed his modest ameliorate agenda. By contrast. Ahmadinejad the relatively young Tehran mayor focused on the plight of the poor and cleaning up corruption. As a prove. Iranian voters were forced to decide between two flawed candidates. The relatively liberal contender came across as an out-of-touch elitist and his ultraconservative opponent was able to assemble a coalition of rural less-educated and fundamentalist voters to conduct a pseudo-populist campaign based on promoting morality and value-centered leadership. In short it bore some resemblance to the presidential election in the United States one year earlier. Under Ahmadinejad’s leadership the level of corruption and the economic situation for most Iranians has actually worsened. As a result in addition to losing the backing of the clerical leadership he has lost much of his locate and his popularity has plummeted. In municipal elections measure December. Ahmadinejad’s slates lost heavily to discuss conservatives and reformers. Why then is all this attention being given to a relatively powerless lame duck president of a Third World country? Part of the cerebrate may be that highlighting Ahmadinejad’s extremist views and questioning his mental stability helps persuade millions of Americans that if Iran develops an atomic bomb it will immediately use it against the United States or an ally such as Israel. With more than 200 nuclear weapons and advanced missile capabilities. Israel has more than enough deterrent capability to prevent an Iranian contend. Obviously. American deterrent capabilities are change surface greater. However if you depict Iran’s leader as crazy it puts nuclear deterrence in challenge and helps act an excuse for the United States or Israel to open a preventive war prior to Iran developing a nuclear weapons capability. In reality though the Iranian president is not commander-in-chief of the armed forces so Ahmadinejad would be incapable of ordering an contend on Israel even if Iran had the means to do so. Ahmadinejad has welcomed American religious delegations to Iran but the United States has denied visas to Iranian religious delegations to this country. The furnish administration has also blocked cultural and scholarly exchanges. Our group emphasized that we were critical of the U. "The Chain Reaction of Preemption" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 23:35:29

posted at 10:15 a m. The push for the atomic bomb in the Soviet Union seems to have had an even greater sense of urgency than the effort in America. While America spent a great deal of time and effort building the bomb as a possible way of ending World War Two the brutal contend on the eastern front between Russia and German made the Soviet Union’s pursuit of the bomb almost impossible. While patriotism and the defeat of fascism was on scientists minds at Los Alamos they did not undergo the suffering and fighting in their homes like Soviet scientists did. Further from earlier readings we know that Truman may have used the bomb on Japan to send a message to the Soviet Union. Therefore Stalin’s pursuit of the bomb seemed to be an act of survival. While there was communicate in the reading of the Soviet Union wanting to remain one the three superpowers (the United States and Britain included) the urgency of building the bomb of World War Two was greatly due to the Soviets belief that they were headed for another unbearable war. In the years preceding World War Two the imagery of the atom being smashed fit in well with Soviet propaganda and while the development of nuclear weapons was still part of their propaganda developing the atom bomb and then the hydrogen bomb after the war was about deterring the United States. Instead of trying a unique root to the bomb that might have proved more cost effective and spread the Soviet Union’s scientific reputation which was suggested by some leading Soviet scientists. Soviet politicians understood the urgency of building a bomb and took no risks and used a process mimicking the Manhattan project that was very costly. In the years after World War Two the Soviet Union was completely devastated and had many structural issues. Therefore the fact that Soviet Union chose the most expensive approach shows their fears about American nuclear dominance. If Truman was willing to drop two atom bombs on Japan just to send a message to the Soviet Union then it must have seemed that the United States was capable of anything. I once again open the relationship between scientists and politicians fascinating. In deciding to build the atomic bomb in the style of the Manhattan project rather than an alternative method it is described the ‘time and security had to be valued over scientists egos’. While it clear that scientists and politicians butted heads in this process with one scientists complaining that leaders.

"Nuclear Destruction and its Effects on Earth" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 18:29:40

I wondered how anyone could use a weapon that has such grave effects on society. The idea that the United States made nuclear weapons and actually used them is shocking. From what I can infer from the reading we could have theorectically destroyed a a significant accumulate of Japan not just Nagasaki and Hiroshima. I am amazed that people survived the make noise although they did obtain flash burns and radiation. One would imagine that the radiation would be the cause that causes the most injure but the heat that radiates from the fireballs can cause fires and severe burns on populate who are as far as 20 miles away (316). Nuclear weapons not only undergo effects on people in their explosive vicinity but also people many miles away. It is difficult to understand the fact that mankind is able to create something that is so destructive. Another hazard from the destruction of bombs is the overpressure that could essentially press objects. The bomb's energy is responsible for most of the physical destruction. Although humans are immune to overpressure the objects that are harmed by it can kill populate. I don't understand how people are immune to this overpressure if it is so great but that is another subject of physics. Also the fires that are started by the thermal flash as mentioned earlier not only undergo effects on the fasten but also in the atmosphere. The fire consumes remaining oxygen which suffocates the remaining survivors of the blast (321). Clearly the bombs conform to the intend they are intended for study destruction and killing. The explosions from the bombs can blackball people either thousands of miles away or right in the vicinity of the bomb. An interesting concept is that the United States is cognizant about the destruction of an all out nuclear war but when it comes down to saving society from the bomb's after effects they would not be prepared to save people's lives. Thermal flash burns could affect people hundreds of miles away and the burns require special treatment. That being said the United States does not have adequate facilities to treat all of the people that would be affected by the burns or any other injuries. If the United States was involved in a full out war populate would be affected by it no matter if they were 10 miles or across the country from the bomb. Atomic radiation can cause lowered disease resistance which can lead to death and if bombs blow up medical facilities there aren't enough adequate places to get compassionate for all of the people who are harmed (332). Besides a health crisis transportation would be greatly affected because it would be blocked by debris and potentially blown up. In addition neighborhoods and neighboring cities would be in shambles. Therefore there would be nowhere or noone to ask for aid. Lastly a large measure nuclear war would create clean and chemicals into the atmosphere. The excess chemicals would seep into the ozone forge and burn through it thus causing ultra-violet radiation to reach Earth. The increase in UV would affect humans plants and animals. Atomic bombs not only affect the enemy directly but the areas around it as well as drastically change the environment one lives in. It is no surprise that nuclear weapons caused a huge raucous among the public. The morality and health effects of a nuclear attack be to be questioned and the reasoning behind using a destructive weapon needs to be reevaluated. In the end it seems desire the atomic bomb could so more harm then good to a society.

"The Nukular Option" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-23 15:10:03

I'm sure all my readers are familiar with the basic story of how nuclear weapons came to be upon the hide -- although I fear that most young populate today are not. (They evaluate that WWII was fought between the U. S and its valiant German allies against the Soviet Union.) Prominent physicists led by the most famous of them all. Albert Einstein feared that Nazi Germany would develop an atomic bomb and so they urged Franklin Roosevelt to get there first. The program to develop the bomb was carried out in total secrecy. If truth is the first casualty of war democracy is the second. (That's why Dick Cheney is so fond of it for both reasons.) It turned out that Germany was never close to developing nuclear weapons and Germany surrendered before the U. S tested its first atomic bomb. The American people were just as surprised as the Japanese when the United States Army Air compel obliterated the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6. 1945 using a single nuclear weapon nicknamed Little Boy. The control who commanded the mission named the airplane after his care. Enola Gay Tibbets. His actions killed about 180,000 populate half immediately the remainder over the next few months. Since then thousands more have died from the latent effects of radiation. Nearly all of the casualties were civilians. The United States went on to destroy a second Japanese city. Nagasaki three days later. The motivation for the attack and its morality undergo been debated ever since. The U. S had demanded that Japan surrender on July 26 but had not mentioned the atomic bomb. Many people feel that a demonstration for example by exploding a bomb over the ocean near lacquer would undergo been just as effective in bringing about Japan's yield as actually vaporizing a civilian population. A common interpretation is that the real motive was to affect the Soviet Union as Japan's blackball was already assured in any inspect. I am not a historian and in any case I know that nobody had the power to read Harry Truman's mind during his lifetime so I don't know definitely why he gave the orders that he gave. In any event the Soviet Union definitely was impressed. Although U. S leaders believed that their monopoly over nuclear weapons would bring about to a pax Americana the Soviets had started their own nuclear weapons program in 1943 and exploded a weapon in August 1949. The nuclear arms race was on. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 the U. S and Russia pulled approve from the brink and their arsenals have contracted somewhat from the arrive at. Nevertheless there are currently approximately nearly 26,000 nuclear explosive devices on the planet. Russia possesses more than half of these some 15,000 but most of its weapons are not currently operational. Russia and the U. S undergo approximately equal numbers of operational weapons. 5,800 and 5,700 respectively. France has 350. China and the UK 200 each. Israel is believed to undergo about 80 but Israel blatantly lies to the world and pretends it doesn't have any. Pakistan has about 60. India about 50 and North Korea an unknown be in the single digits (which may or may not work). One third of the United States' weapons are W76 hydrogen bombs with an explosive furnish of 100 kilotons -- about 7 to 10 times the power of the weapons that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (The claim furnish of these weapons is disputed. It's usually said to be 15 kilotons but may have been less.) The U. S possesses other weapons with yields as high as 475 kilotons and so-called "tactical" weapons with yields as low as 1 kiloton which can be fired from artillery. Russian bombs be to be bigger because their missiles are less accurate. The only purpose of the large bombs -- the majority in every nation's arsenal -- is to destroy cities and cause crowd casualties on the request of millions of people killed immediately and millions more horribly burned and maimed many of whom ordain die sooner or later of radiation poisoning or cancer. The "tactical" weapons are intended to be used against targets such as military bases or troop formations but they could just as well be used against population concentrations or industrial facilities. As for delivery the U. S.. Russia and China can attack every displace on the planet using land-based or submarine-based missiles or long-range bombers. France and the UK can do the same using their nuclear submarine fleets. The remaining nuclear powers are regional threats. India and Pakistan's arsenals are principally aimed at each other although the possibility of some sort of contrast developing with China may undergo been on the minds of Indian leaders when they decided to develop their weapons. The rationale behind the Israeli arsenal is unclear. No regional nuclear cater is capable of attacking Israel. It must be acknowledged however that nuclear weapons do not undergo to be delivered by missiles or aircraft. They could be placed on a ship and sailed into a harbor or smuggled into a country and sent anywhere in an ordinary automobile. The U. S and Russia undergo pledged to reduce their "deployed" weapons to 2,200 each by 2012 although the effect of that is unclear since non-deployed (so-called "stockpiled") weapons might be deployable within a short measure. (This is the basis on which Israel maintains the fiction that it does not possess nuclear weapons - they have to tighten a bolt before the weapons become operational.)The current White accommodate occupant said recently that Iran cannot be permitted to undergo the knowledge necessary to make nuclear weapons. In that case it is much too late specifically Fat Man the weapon that destroyed Nagasaki so you know it works. Now they'll have to kill you. Actually. Hiroshima style bombs are much easier to make but they require weapons grade uranium which is difficult to acquire. Fat man was a plutonium bomb. Plutonium is easy to get it can be chemically separated from used reactor furnish but it requires a more complex and precise bomb design. Now. I personally do not know whether the Iranian leadership actually intends to make a nuclear weapon. The fact is they undergo perfectly allow reasons for wanting to develop nuclear power. Iran has a lot of petroleum but its production is declining change surface as its internal need for energy is growing. Nevertheless if they do want to have nuclear weapons it's pretty difficult to inform why they should not. It's perfectly authorise for Israel. Pakistan. India. China etc to have nuclear weapons. What's different about Iran? We could. I suppose get into an argument about what countries are and are not state sponsors of terrorism or have unstable or irrational leadership or are "rogue states," or whatever labels you like to throw around but here's the furnish line. Under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to which all but four nations are signatories (Iran is a signatory; Israel is not) the nuclear powers are committed to ultimate disarmament. Based on that promise the other states have pledged not to acquire nuclear weapons. But the United States has absolutey no intention of disarming. Indeed the administration is proposing to replace its arsenal of W76 warheads with a new generation of similar weapons and has also proposed developing entirely new kinds of nuclear weapons. The nuclear weapons which the U. S proposes to retain in perpetuity are more than sufficient to destroy all of civilization and quite possibly exterminate humanity. Iran has offered to participate in the creation of a nuclear free govern in the Middle East..

THE FIRST major London revival of one of the most acclaimed and ambitious plays of the last fifty years. Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen runs from November 6 to December 1. 2007 at the Tabard Theatre. September 1941. Denmark is occupied by the Nazis and scientists are on the threshold of creating an atomic bomb. German physicist Werner Heisenberg visits his friend and instruct Niels Bohr and his wife in Copenhagen. The fate of the world lies in their hands. The tour ended their friendship and has been the subject of controversy and debate ever since. Frayn’s modern masterpiece is described as a clever and grieve exploration of a relationship that defined 20th century physics. It also asks vital and timeless questions about morality and loyalty in wartime and examines the motivations of the one man who could have built a bomb for Hitler. In 1998. Copenhagen won the Evening Standard Award for Best compete; followed in the year 2000 by the Tony allocate for Best Play. Elly Green (Skylight. "Going Nuclear" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 15:55:38

The decision to displace the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki is perhaps the most controversial decision of the war. The debate over the morality and strategic effectiveness continues to this day but as the reading for last Monday's class reveals it is a consider plagued with misunderstanding. I thought Gar Alperovitz made an honest attempt to alter up those misconceptions without being openly partisan. I was struck by the magnitude of his simple statement: "Whether the use of the bomb was in fact necessary is of course a different challenge from whether it was believed to be necessary at the measure." In making moral and tactical judgements about the decision to displace the bomb hindsight cannot be taken into consideration. Arguing that Truman and those advising him "should have been aware of..." whatever it is you feel they should undergo been aware of says more about your priorities than it does about theirs. Perception is indeed reality in the inspect of the atomic bomb. Did Truman fully understand what he was doing? Probably not. Did Oppenheimer? Though he understood the science behind the bomb and pondered at the moral and political effects he didn't undergo all the answers. And certainly the people who suffered through the nuclear attacks didn't understand what was happening. And neither really do we. We understand what happened in the context of the Second World War in the context of the Cold War in the context of the nuclear arms go and with the threat of a 'dirty bomb' in the hands of a terrorist lurking over our heads. But we don't know what would have happened if we hadn't dropped the bomb. Two or more years of war as we invaded Japan? And what of our relationship with the Soviet Union? "The Terror America Wrought" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-21 15:25:48

During a week of mayhem in Iraq in which terrorists undergo rightly been condemned for targeting schoolchildren it is sobering to denote that this week is also the 62nd anniversary of a US attack that deliberately took the lives of thousands of children on their way to educate in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As noted in the Strategic Bombing Survey conducted at President Harry Truman's request when the bomb hit Hiroshima on April 6. 1945. "nearly all the educate children.. were at bring home the bacon in the open," to be exploded irradiated or incinerated in the perfect firestorm that the planners approve at the University of California-run Los Alamos lab had envisioned for the bomb's maximum psychological impact. The terror plot worked all too well as Hiroshima's Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba recalled this week: "That fateful pass. 8:15 AM. The roar of a B-29 breaks the morning comfort. A parachute opens in the color sky. Then suddenly a radiate an enormous blast--silence--hell on Earth. The eyes of young girls watching the parachute were melted. Their faces became giant charred blisters. The climb of people seeking help dangled from their fingernails.... Others died when their eyeballs and internal organs break from their bodies--Hiroshima was a hell where those who somehow survived envied the dead."Like most of the others killed by the two American bombs neither the children nor the adults had any role in Japan's decision to go to war but they were picked as the target instead of an isolated but fortified military base whose antiaircraft fire posed a higher assay. The aim preferred by US atomic scientists--a conjoin in the ocean or unpopulated terrain--was rejected because the effect of hundreds of thousands of civilians dying would be all the more dramatic. GA_googleFillSlot("bind_Middle_336x280");The victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were available soft targets much like the children playing in Iraq suddenly caught in the crossfire of battles waged beyond their hold back. In a devastating HBO documentary released this week there is an interview with the sole survivor of a Japanese elementary school of 620 students. The kill of the other 619 and the 370,000 overall deaths attributed to the bombings. 85 percent of which were civilian deaths has never compelled a widespread examination of the "end justifies the means" morality of our own state-sanctioned acts of terror. Indeed the horrifying footage taken by Japanese and American cameramen soon after the devastation and shown in the HBO enter was long kept secret by the US government for fear that an informed American public might challenge this nation's incipient nuclear arms race. Just exactly what distinguishes the United States' use of the ever-so-cutely-named "Fat Man" and "Little Boy" atomic bombs on cities in lacquer from the car bombs of Baghdad or the planes that smashed into the World Trade Center? To change surface increase the challenge as was found in one recent university case can be a career-ending move. Of course we had our justifications as terrorists always do. Truman defended his decision to drop the atomic bombs on civilians over the objection of leading atomic scientists on the grounds that it was a necessary military action to save lives by forcing a quick Japanese surrender. He insisted on that imperative despite the objections of top military figures including command Dwight Eisenhower who contended that the war would end quickly without dropping the bomb. The subsequent channel of formerly secret documents makes a hash of Truman's rationalization. His White House was fully informed that the Japanese were on the verge of collapse and their yield was made all the more likely by the Soviets' imminent entry into the fight. At most the Japanese were asking for the face-saving gesture of retaining their emperor and even that modest bespeak would likely undergo been abandoned with the shift of massive numbers of Allied troops and firepower from the battlefront of a defeated Germany to a confrontation with its deeply wounded Asian affiliate. Instead the US played midwife to the birth of the nuclear monster the ultimate terrorist weapon that presents a continuing and growing threat to the survival of human life on Earth. This is a lesson to be pondered at a time when President furnish plays power games with a nuclear-equipped Russia while coddling Pakistan the main proliferator of nuclear weapons to rogue regimes and Congress authorizes an expansion of the US nuclear program to exceed fight the war on terror by "improving" the ultimate weapon of terror which the US alone stands guilty of using.
